The additional expertise brought by the acquisition of Kathrein’s antenna and filters business will broaden the Ericsson Radio System offering, which is vital for the introduction of 5G

The antenna system is one of the most crucial areas in a radio access network. The performance of the components in the antenna system ultimately determines the effectiveness of the radio site, while a poor antenna system can severely reduce the radio network performance.

Today's complex antenna systems with multiple frequencies and multiple technologies on the same radio site, put great demands on the ability to create effective antenna system solutions.

Ericsson Antenna System is an integral part of Ericsson Radio System and provides a full range of high-quality products in the following areas: passive antennas, active antennas, filters and combiners, tower mounted amplifiers, feeder system, and accessories.

With the growing importance of antenna technology, we are expanding our Ericsson Radio System portfolio with a range of new products. We have now strengthened our in-house antenna competence and capabilities through the acquisition of Kathrein’s antenna and filters business, an important step in the execution of our Networks portfolio strategy.

Formerly the antenna and filter division of Kathrein, Kathrein Mobile Communication strong R&D organization will serve as a valuable complement to Ericsson. This additional expertise will bring vital competence necessary to evolve radio access products, helping broaden our antenna and radio system offering and further optimize site space, which is vital for the introduction of 5G.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks talks about our enhanced antenna system portfolio

The antenna domain is being transformed to include multiple frequencies as well as multiple technologies. At the same time, radios are being consolidated behind antennas and are being integrated into the antenna structure to optimize the usage of site space and overall radio network performance.

With more powerful 5G networks on the way, given the current constraints on sites, antenna technology must be further developed to provide the performance, capacity and coverage required.

Bringing in a strong R&D organization with extensive expertise in antenna design and research coupled with a solid IPR portfolio means we have the right capability and competence needed for the evolution of advanced radio network products.

Founded in 1919, Kathrein is a world leading provider of antenna and filter technologies with headquarters in Rosenheim, Germany. The company has long been a valued supplier to Ericsson. Together, we have one of the strongest combined antenna system patent portfolios in the industry.

With this acquisition, Ericsson has gained a competent organization focusing on R&D, production, and sales, based in more than 20 locations including Germany, Romania, the U.S., Mexico, and China. With most of the professionals based in Europe, Ericsson is complementing its already strong R&D base across 21 locations on the continent.

The antenna system is one of the most crucial areas in a radio access network. Ericsson Antenna System is an integral part of Ericsson Radio System and provides a full range of high-quality products in the following areas: passive antennas, active antennas, filters and combiners, tower mounted amplifiers, feeder system, and accessories.

With the requirements of today, we create the technology of tomorrow. Our latest product creates the smallest footprint ever and convinces with highest performance despite our novel sustainable efficiency. The right time to take a closer look at the details of next-generation technology.

The Ericsson Antenna System is an integral part of the Ericsson Radio System and offers the best option for effective modernization of 5G site solutions with a full range of high-quality passive and active antenna products. Our solutions focus on performance optimization and cost reduction.

Ericsson Radio System enables smooth, fast and cost-effective migration from 4G to 5G, allowing operators to launch the new technology and grow 5G coverage fast, no matter the scale and complexity. It comprises hardware, software and services for radio, RAN Compute, transport, power, enclosure, antenna and site solutions– all run by a common management system.
